Time: Activity 1

Look at a Henri Cartier-Bresson photograph and discuss why you think that capturing the decisive moment has added to the picture’s quality.

I think that capturing the decisive moment has added to Henri Cartier-Bresson's photographs because each picture stands out because of what the person or people are doing in it. Even if the person is posed and looking at the camera, their surroundings give more detail to what their life entails. Had the photo been taken somewhere else, with the person posed just the same, it might not have been as dramatic and meaningful. Take for example the photograph below. The man in the shop has paused his work because he was done, and the man sitting down has taken a break to eat. A few minutes before or later, either one of the men could have been doing different things.
