Time: Activity 4

Find a photograph where the photographer has used a slow shutter speed and describe the subject matter including the background. Discuss any technical difficulties the photographer may have encountered and how these mat have been overcome.
  • Discuss what happened to the depth of field and why.
  • Discuss whether the image gives you the feeling of movement, stating the reasons for your conclusions.

The subject of my photograph is the girl and the background was a brick fence, which is in focus. The background is in focus because I used a large aperture, which allowed more light into the lens, which was needed because, where I took the photo, it was very dark, even with the sparklers lit. Some technical difficulties I faced were getting my model to stay still for the multiple seconds it took to take it so that she did not blur and the correct shudder speed. Too long of a speed and the sparklers would have hit the ground and created a brighter light, and too short of a speed and the sparklers would not have completed the whole arch. The photo does give a sense of movement, because even if the girl in the middle is still, the sparklers that were thrown create an arch around her, which obvious is something thrown since the arch would not exist naturally.
