Find two landscape photographs that question social values or act as a metaphor for personal issues that the photographer is trying to express. Discuss whether the communication is clear or ambiguous and how this communication is conveyed.
Example: What does the image below say about humans need to control the environment? Or, does it indicate an attempt to recreate a time long past and remind people of their outdoor beginnings? What do you think? Does it say anything different?
A hot social issue today is how humans affect their environment to fit their own wants and needs, such as how much gas a car uses. The first photo below expresses this through a tree, marked and cut down. The issue here is how humans' need for lumber hurts nature, and how it impacts forests and wildlife. The second photo has more to do about people's enjoyment and entertainment, along with a personal gain of money. While the golf course on the mountain in the forest is extremely beautiful, someone had to cut down hundreds of trees in order to put it there. The money involved is the main purpose, since the experience is of a high quality and the owner can charge people more.
