Light: Activity 2

Find an example of a photograph where the subject has been lit by a single light source and an example where more than one light has been used. Describe in each the quality and position of the brightest or main light and the effect this has on the subject. In the second example describe the quality and effect the additional light has.

The light source is a single flash at the subject's right, fired through the white translucent plastic of a broken illuminated street sign as a diffuser. While the technique is quite unique, it gives the photo a nice quality, as if the photo was taken in a studio and not on a street. The single light brightens one side of the woman's face, and casts a shadow on the other half, giving the photograph a dramatic look.

This photograph with multiple lights shows exceptional quality and technique. The photographer used a DIY ring-light and one strobe behind for backlight with multiple gels layered in front. Rather than creating a dramatic tone, the lights create a softer look, and the colors of the gels give her more of a glow-y look as well.
