This photo uses rule of thirds because the front of the bike is positioned at the bottom right intersection point. That means that the front of the bike is the point of focus and leads the viewer to look at the entire bicycle, or the subject.

My photo of a sunset uses rule of thirds because the sun is positioned in the bottom left intersection point. This balances out the photo and makes the viewer's eyes go to the sun and then look out from there and look at the entire sunset.
While this photo does not have rule of thirds, it does work composition wise. The frame is not unbalanced because leading lines are being used, not only from the road and its lane lines, but also from the tree-line leading into the rocks in the distance.
Again, this photo does not use rule of thirds, but it has composition. There is no immediate subject on an intersection point, but the rock and the trees out of frame reflect off of the water and create balance, along with the rocks in the water as well.
